Château de Chanteloup is a castle campsite in the Sarthe close to Le Mans. The campsite is situated on the beautiful estate around the castle with lawns, forests and ponds. The camping pitches on grass are spacious and demarcated by trees, flower fields and woodpiles.

Estate campsite

The camping fields are located around the castle and the historical outbuildings. The history of Chanteloup, originally a small stately home, dates back to 1400, but the main buildings are from the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. The swimming pool is nicely blended into the landscape and is surrounded by lawns and greenery.

A sense of calmness prevails at the swimming pool. Not far from the swimming pool you will find playground equipment for children, such as a trampoline, bouncer and swings.

Historical guest quarters

Château de Chanteloup has five guest quarters established in the old buildings. They are furnished with antique or rural family heirlooms, yet equipped with modern comforts like television and dishwasher. Almost all quarters have a private garden with garden furniture, loungers and a barbecue. In addition, there are glamping tents which have also been partly fitted out in authentic style. Children will be delighted with their own small tent next to the large tent with all conveniences.

Plenty to do

The campsite also offers amenities for sports and games. There are soccer and volley ball fields and a fitness area. Activities such as sports tournaments, games and building huts, are organised on a regular basis. In high season there is a mini club for children aged 4 to 10. Activities such as canoeing, paintballing or tree climbing are available in the immediate vicinity. Car racing fans can go to the racing circuit of the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Liked - Chantelooup is a special place and there is no other campsite that I like the ambiance of as much. However it is becoming over priced and does not really warrant the price or the rating of 5 stars in its present state. Upkeep of the grounds is good but not as good as it should be with planting not maintained, we might have a drought but there is no excuse for weeds. Cleanliness of dated sanitary facilities could be much better and all toilets and washrooms need updating to maintain the star rating.
Disliked - The restaurant service, food and price does not reflect the 5 Stars (mind you it never has in 20 Years). There is no longer a shop of any use, it used to have provisions now it's a few bottles of drink and a jar of mayo!

Liked - We love coming here & have come for many years. This year there seem less staff, very limited cleaning which the weather probably made worse as it rained lots for the first time ever! The site bathrooms were not particularly clean & not topped up with hand soap or toilet roll enough rendering some toilets out of use & some of the showers not working. Staff need to check these more.
Definitely feels different now under new owners.
Having said that - the pitches are fantastic and spacious, it is this that makes Chanteloup special & if you go with a caravan & own facilities then its perfect.
Disliked - The owners are clearly investing a lot in their residence and the new log cabins, but the place just needs a little more attention to the cleanliness of toilets and showers.
Also the restaurant still isn’t great - and expensive for takeaways - missing a huge opportunity, other castle sites do roast chickens etc for takeaway and great value - takeaways here are expensive especially for feeding a family - even as a treat.

Liked - We liked and have always liked the large open spacious pitches.
Disliked - The facilities and level of cleanliness has deteriorated since our last visit. The bins were only emptied once a day at best with rubbish often overflowing. Toilet area was often unclean with no toilet paper and the flush often didn’t work.

Liked - Lovely site
Disliked - Customer service was appalling we booked a pitch in the woods when we got to our pitch it was taken it was a very tight road and only way to return was to unhitch when caravan base was hit underneath. we were given and open field pitch which we were not happy with when I confronted manager se said it was net there fault !!! and i do not like the pitch we can leave and have a full refund!!
this is terrible customer service.
the pitch we booked was taken by a regular client that had decided to stat one extra night how!!

Liked - This was our sixth visit to chanteloup & our first since the new owners have taken over. There wasn't the warm welcome that was usually given from Dominic & the dream team - in fact we had to find someone to come to the reception area ! This was the case on a number of occasions when we went to reception.The staff were helpful but that unique friendly family feel has gone.We also noticed the hedging around the pool area was unkept & missing in some areas & grass was also brown in areas - This was always such a beautiful area with the hedges/planting grass immaculately kept .
Disliked - The pool area looking unkept - no supervision around the pool area & children were on one occasion throwing the chairs into the pool - I did go to reception to advise but no action was taken.On past visits you would always see staff wonder around this area ,we saw no one over the week we were there.
