We had pre-booked the campsite online before leaving the UK, and on checking in found the staff to be efficient, if not overly friendly. We were assigned a specific pitch, and were not able to choose one, but all of the pitches appeared to be good, anyway.
The site was situated on an island in the Loire, within easy walking distance, via a bridge, of the pretty town of Amboise, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years.
Vehicular and pedestrian access was via a PIN coded gate, (6 characters and difficult to remember!)
There were around 300 pitches on site, so it was fairly large, and took several minutes to walk from one end to the other.
The pitch was very large, grassy, and clearly marked, with trees providing shade. A water point was fairly close by.
There were 3 unisex sanitary blocks, the one closest to us being the most modern. It had WC cubicles on the outside of the building, shower cubicles, wash cubicles, sinks, dishwashing and laundry on the inside. No paper or soap were provided (which is quite common in French campsites). There were no sinks anywhere near the WC cubicles, so most people weren\'t bothering to wash their hands. The showers were fine, with adjustable hot water, and the blocks were regularly cleaned.
There was a reception and a restaurant/bar (which was closed one of the evenings we were there) where bread could be bought in the morning, with no need to order.
Despite being a large site, we enjoyed our stay here, and felt it to be good value for money. The proximity to the river and the charming town were also major plus points. We would certainly stay again.
Great situation within walking distance of the very beautiful city and chateau . Restaurant serving very nice food. Croissants and bread available. As previously said pitches are quite cosy but the position so close to Amboise is ideal.
A large municipal campsite that has no static vans on it. Open pitches are spacious and plentiful. The reception desk was helpful and courteous speaking excellent English. There was a restaurant/bar area that was open even in the middle of September. Menu was limited but everything served with chips! The view of the chateau across the river is outstanding, especially when lit-up in the evening. Free wifi with good reception. The town is 10 minutes walk across the bridge and is lively and bustling. A large busy market on a Sunday morning is well worth a visit and there is a smaller market on the Friday. The chateau de Clos Luce is well worth visiting. As it is where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years there is a an exhibition of most of his inventions in the chateau and in the gardens there are full scale replicas. Amazing place to visit. The only sell draw back is that there is a single sanitaire block. These are spotless, modern and provide plenty of facilities. However they are at the far end of the site and it is a good walk if your are at the other end. Don’t forget anything! Will be back.
If full, this site must have a very regimented feel, with pitches arranged in long straight rows and no hedges or other separation between them; but when I was there in early September there were lots of empty pitches. The ground is flat, but extremely hard and stony; getting pegs in is a major challenge. The site\'s great virtue is its location: on the island, so quiet, but within easy walking distance of the centre of Amboise. I used it merely as an overnight stop, but it would make a good base for a longer stay.
As previous reviews have stated this is a large site, very convenient for Amboise. We arrived mid morning to a very friendly and helpful reception. Although allocated a pitch we were told to change it if we wished and did so to be away from other vans and trees. We told reception and she appeared to change our details. Unfortunately, mid evening a French van arrived and after driving round the site several times on his mobile phone, with little regard for pedestrians he decided to join us on our pitch. There were lots of unoccupied pitches, including the ones on either side of us. We decided that our language skills were not up to an argument and that for some reason he felt he had to make a point rather than try to speak to us. This was the only unpleasant behaviour we encountered in several weeks away. I understand that mistakes are made and that the campsite cannot be held responsible for the behaviour of their customers but perhaps they could do a check of the site after reception closes?
We agree with many other positive comments here - This is a large municipal site, being part of an island leisure complex & nature park, with the obvious advantage of being within c.15 mins walk to the centre of Amboise. Although pleasant enough, pitches are uneven in places with barely any hedges or other demarcation between them, although mature trees do give some shade. Sanitary facilities are clean & plentiful; staff were pleasant & helpful. A cycle path runs around the island & links with the ‘Loire a Velo’ routes. Wi-fi is available throughout the site, the signal/speed was not great for us, but at least it was free! Note, site not in Acsi discount scheme, but rates are still very reasonable. We would stay again.
Very reasonably priced. Our pitch was relatively spacious and it was nice and shady in the morning. The swimming pool is next door to the campsite - the pool area also has a grassy area for sunbathing/reading and they have a little waterslide as well. The campsite is a stone's throw away from the Amboise chateu and the town. A 5 minute drive away, you will also find a kajak rental and there are not many nicer ways of spending a sunny day than floating down the river Loire on a kajak!
