Camping La Bien-Assise issituated close to the centre of Guînes, a village not far from Calais. The castle camping site is therefore popular with British tourists for whom this is the first (or last) stopover in France. The camping site is located in an attractive, rather flat, rural area. The grounds are dominated by large trees and look very attractive. The rural setting will give you an immediate French holiday feeling, while the coast of the English Channel is not far away.
Camping site and sanitary facilities
There are 46 mobile homes on the camping site which are fitted with all amenities. There are also four wooden, fully furnished rental holiday cottages. Other camping guests have access to good and modern sanitary facilities in the service building.
Because camping La Bien-Assise is not directly situated on the sea, a lake or river, it has a covered swimming pool with large water slide. However, at a distance of only 16 km, you will find Escalles and Cap Blanc-Nez, where you can spend the day on the beach. Wimereux and Sangatte are located at similar distances.
On the grounds you will also find the three-star hotel L’auberge du Colombier, located in a small 19th century castle, as well as the restaurant La Ferme Gourmande. The restaurant serves classic French dishes, also on the terrace when the weather allows it. From here you have a view of the castle's dovecote. There is a cosy bar near the reception (with a small library).
As is the case at most camping sites, camping La Bien-Assise also has its own small shop. Are you looking for a larger assortment? In Guînes itself there is a variety of supermarkets and typical French shops.

Have stayed here many times at the start and end of touring holidays to France and beyond. Campground is in a lovely setting with easy access to pitches. Pitches are of a good size but not well defined is some cases creating problems sometimes with people not respecting your space. Unless you have paid for a serviced pitch water points appear to be scarce. Toilet facilities disappointing for a 5 star site. Overall though very good and I am sure we will stay there again.
We have stayed here many times on both our way out and back from holiday. It is very convenient for both the A26 and A16. Facilities are good, but the price is high outside of the dates when the ACSI card can be used. It was a shame the cafe was shut when we arrived in late September, but overall this is a good site and we will use it in the future.
We stayed here for a night on the way out in early May and two nights on the way back in late May.
The reception staff were really friendly and helpful. The site was very quiet on the first visit but much busier on the second visit. The toilet blocks were shared (male / female) but were kept clean. The appearance of the site is very pleasant and it was only about 20 minutes from the ferry. Lots of people seem to use it for overnight stays. The pitches we were given were grass and level. There is a charge for wifi. There are some statics and 'permanent' tents, but not overly intrusive. We would go here again.
Not a bad site if you are in need of one near Calais. The welcome was ok, the facilities were ok. The pitch was rather gloomy and there were a lot of pitches with quite large trees closeby - great in the heat but maybe not as good otherwise. There is quite a major roundabout by the entrance to the site and I was conscious of heavy goods vehicles on it quite early in the morning. All in all ok however the price for a night (ACSI card rate) there are cheaper and better around as far as we are concerned.
Only good thing is handy stopover as close to Calais. Charged more than other sites for daily tourist tax. Staff could be more friendly - not one smiled. Better sites available at cheaper rates. Close to busy road with many noisy lorries passing.
Just the usual overnighter last night. Friendly staff and terrific meal in the restaurant, however the sanitary facilities have changed little since 1999 which is strange given the move to 5 star rating. Whilst other aspects are important for longer stays sanitaries are top priority for however long the stay.
Going through showers/toilet areas to wash up is not acceptable these days.
The night before we stayed in a 2 star site which had far superior sanitary facilities.
Had stayed here before but was disappointed this time (May20-22). Grass and overhanging branches on pitch needed attention.
After we bought drinks at the bar we were told the free wifi was not available! Wouldn't have bought drinks if we'd known!
Big grass pitches, We paid extra for water & drainage - but it was expensive. Good takeaway & bar food in a nice setting. French restaurant by the chateau is excellent. 4 toilet/shower blocks all spotless with separate ladies/gents toilets with soap & toilet rolls (not usually the case we have found in France !) Shop very expensive. Good stop off for Calais & channel tunnel.
We stayed here a year ago and didn't have a great time but the handy location, 15 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal, drew us back again. Unfortunately we encountered exactly the same problems as before. The maze of showers and sinks are cold, dirty and old. Certainly a long way from the 5-star facilities that the site claims to have. In fact, these were the worst toilet blocks of all the 7 sites on our trip. The pitches themselves were great, grassy, marked with hedges, plenty of water points etc. however, as with our last visit, we were kept awake at night by loutish behaviour from other campers. I suppose the site suffers as a result of its easy-to-get-to location from England but a fair few of the 'campers', particularly in the numerous Eurocamp tents, were just there to get very drunk on cheap drink. I've seldom felt so ashamed to be British. We won't be back again.
Couple in motorhome, regular visitors, second time this year, been coming here nearly 10 years, always stay here to visit the vets and to do last minute shopping. Having spent a month touring Europe, yet again we return to La Bien Assise and agree it continues to be one of the nicest sites we have stayed on. A pleasure to walk around. Large grass pitches, overlooking countryside. However I have the same 2 moans each time we stay. The outdated sanitary block (2 star at best, could only get a cold shower today, no soap in the dispenser), and the expensive wi-fi if you are on a short stay (why can't you log on and off? Other sites do). Shop, bar and takeaway closed 2 weeks before site closes but is still very busy. More importantly is a sign in the office, 'ACSI Card will NOT be accepted from 2016.' I feel our love affair is coming to an end.
