Château de Chanteloup is a castle campsite in the Sarthe close to Le Mans. The campsite is situated on the beautiful estate around the castle with lawns, forests and ponds. The camping pitches on grass are spacious and demarcated by trees, flower fields and woodpiles.

Estate campsite

The camping fields are located around the castle and the historical outbuildings. The history of Chanteloup, originally a small stately home, dates back to 1400, but the main buildings are from the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. The swimming pool is nicely blended into the landscape and is surrounded by lawns and greenery.

A sense of calmness prevails at the swimming pool. Not far from the swimming pool you will find playground equipment for children, such as a trampoline, bouncer and swings.

Historical guest quarters

Château de Chanteloup has five guest quarters established in the old buildings. They are furnished with antique or rural family heirlooms, yet equipped with modern comforts like television and dishwasher. Almost all quarters have a private garden with garden furniture, loungers and a barbecue. In addition, there are glamping tents which have also been partly fitted out in authentic style. Children will be delighted with their own small tent next to the large tent with all conveniences.

Plenty to do

The campsite also offers amenities for sports and games. There are soccer and volley ball fields and a fitness area. Activities such as sports tournaments, games and building huts, are organised on a regular basis. In high season there is a mini club for children aged 4 to 10. Activities such as canoeing, paintballing or tree climbing are available in the immediate vicinity. Car racing fans can go to the racing circuit of the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Liked - We had a fabulous stay & felt great due to few pitches being occupied!
Extremely friendly staff, great restaurant (if a little expensive), great bar & the facilities cannot be faulted.
Met some lovely people & Rosie dog catered for!
Disliked - Cost of French wine!

Travelling party: Family with children, 4 – 12 years

Liked - The only thing our 8 year old moaned about was that we didn't stay longer. The pool, with grass around it is so much more comfortable and homely than the usual concrete and the lake was a great bonus. Our son and friends children loved taking the boat out and our son was able to go fishing to his great delight (although he didn't catch anything?)
The little shop is reasonably well stocked and although we didn't try it on this occasion the menu at the restaurant looked lovely and the tables outside and well spaced for COVID
Disliked - Shower areas felt a little old but perfectly serviceable

Travelling party: Young couple

Liked - Loved the layout of the pitches and the space provided. Loved that you can request the area you want so that you get the sunny or shady pitch you want. Great for walking the dogs.
Disliked - Enjoyed bar area but did not find restaurant area appealing as looked dark & not particularly atmospheric. Toilets & showers ok but 1 block not in use and long walk to main block

Travelling party: Seniors

Liked - Relaxed site with good facilities, some upkeep to catch up on but still very enjoyable. Staff and reception team are excellent and very helpful. Anything to please was evident and greatly appreciated.
Disliked - Pitch was our choice but grass all gone so very muddy when wet, having been for many years it’s clear new owners have a list of things they wish to do. Quite a bit overgrown on the trees and gardens around the pool compared to previous times but still a lovely site. Sure the new owners will get through the list of things to do after covid years. Our meal at the restaurant did not meet previous experiences.

Liked - We always love coming back here for its unique community feel and anbience
Disliked - There is no longer a shop ( we were relying on) not even basics like milk etc
Chef was ill, so no restaurant or takeaway. Nearest shop too far away and we were shattered after a long drive.

Liked - Friendly, helpful reception & staff. Chantleoup is in a lovely setting & there is a relaxed freindly feel to the place.
Disliked - Tried the bus shuttle service once, the information from reception was all very good, however we waiting for almost two hours with no sign of a bus despite two phone calls to find out when the next service was due (supposed to be avery 30 mins). In the end arrangerd our own transport back to Chanteloup.

Liked - Being back after 2 years away due to covid.
Disliked - The whole place was looking a little tired and unloved. Having stayed here every year since 2000 (last 2 excluded due to covid), I love chateau chanteloup. I would always thoroughly recommend it as a wonderful place to say.

Having said that, it does seem to have been ‘let go’ a little. It needs time spent on caring for the grounds - hedges desperately need a good trim, grass needs taking care of and the whole site needs a good weeding.

A team of gardeners could have it looking too top in a week or two.
