Château de Chanteloup is a castle campsite in the Sarthe close to Le Mans. The campsite is situated on the beautiful estate around the castle with lawns, forests and ponds. The camping pitches on grass are spacious and demarcated by trees, flower fields and woodpiles.

Estate campsite

The camping fields are located around the castle and the historical outbuildings. The history of Chanteloup, originally a small stately home, dates back to 1400, but the main buildings are from the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. The swimming pool is nicely blended into the landscape and is surrounded by lawns and greenery.

A sense of calmness prevails at the swimming pool. Not far from the swimming pool you will find playground equipment for children, such as a trampoline, bouncer and swings.

Historical guest quarters

Château de Chanteloup has five guest quarters established in the old buildings. They are furnished with antique or rural family heirlooms, yet equipped with modern comforts like television and dishwasher. Almost all quarters have a private garden with garden furniture, loungers and a barbecue. In addition, there are glamping tents which have also been partly fitted out in authentic style. Children will be delighted with their own small tent next to the large tent with all conveniences.

Plenty to do

The campsite also offers amenities for sports and games. There are soccer and volley ball fields and a fitness area. Activities such as sports tournaments, games and building huts, are organised on a regular basis. In high season there is a mini club for children aged 4 to 10. Activities such as canoeing, paintballing or tree climbing are available in the immediate vicinity. Car racing fans can go to the racing circuit of the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Liked - The staff were very welcoming and provided amazing service throughout our stay. Spacious pitches in a beautiful setting. We stayed during the Le Mans 24 hour weekend, Chanteloup offers a great alternative to staying at the track. Much better for families. The facilities are first class and I would highly recommend.

Disliked - Limited menu in the restaurant, only serving pizza on Friday night. The service was ok but the pizzas were not good.
The normal menu looked much better but we were reluctant to go back and try it later in our holiday because of the bad experience on Friday.

Liked - The setting is lovely. The staff are very friendly. Toilets and showers are clean and shower is a proper shower with adequate water.
Disliked - Site is very noisy at nignt and doesn't seem to have quiet hours after 11pm like most campsites. Not suitable for families with young children. Pool was very dirty and could do with a clean, it doesn't seem to be cleaned every evening.

Liked - We stayed for one night on our trip south to break up the journey and one on the way home and we were excited to be going back to beautiful Château Chanteloup. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, they were only too happy to move our pitch to a more shaded spot on our return trip. The facilities were excellent/ spotless and the pool is absolutely beautiful. The children loved the play areas and they spent hours feeding the goats! We just wished we had more time to explore the chateau and area.
Disliked - Our meals were perfectly satisfactory at the restaurant but slightly disappointing compared to the standard of everything else. The menu is quite limited and our food was all slightly over cooked. On our return we didn’t have time to eat out so tried the restaurant again and the salad was much better. The wine however was very good.

Liked - The only thing our 8 year old moaned about was that we didn't stay longer. The pool, with grass around it is so much more comfortable and homely than the usual concrete and the lake was a great bonus. Our son and friends children loved taking the boat out and our son was able to go fishing to his great delight (although he didn't catch anything?)
The little shop is reasonably well stocked and although we didn't try it on this occasion the menu at the restaurant looked lovely and the tables outside and well spaced for COVID
Disliked - Shower areas felt a little old but perfectly serviceable

Liked - The surroundings are beautiful, the pool and children's play areas were wonderful for our kids, the pitch was large and convenient for amenities. We loved the bar and sitting out under the canopy playing games with our children. The atmosphere at the bar area was lovely and we met lots of lovely fellow campers. The reception staff we extremely friendly.
Disliked - We would have scored this campsite so much better but sadly we were very disturbed by noisy neighbours in the cabins. The large group played amplified music through the day which made our pitch not relaxing at all. At night they partied and made so much noise our children were left on years unable to sleep and the owners could not control it at all. On out final night they were partying til 4:30/5am. IT ruined what was an amazing campsite as we were not rested at all. I guess we were unlucky, I hope so for other campers sake as this is a super expensive site and not what you expect.
