On the south coast of Spain between the towns of Almeria and Motril in eastern Andalusia, you will find this newly constructed camping site. Camping Mar Azul Balerma offers its guests first class facilities on a level and open terrain. The fishing village of Balerma is only a short distance away and at approx. 10 km from the camping site you will find the attractive small town of Almerimar with a lively harbour packed with restaurants.
All possible flags of Europe welcome you from the through road, which runs parallel to the sea. The camping site is located a bit further off the road. The helpful Dutch owner has built a complete and relaxing camping site in a short period of time in a region which is very popular with hibernators. But also in summer months, this is a paradise. This is certainly the case for families, also due to the entertainment programme and the lovely swimming pool.
On camping site Mar Azul Balerma you can find sunny pitches everywhere and the vegetation is still young. Most of the pitches are provided with shade cloths. Pitches are given an extra tropical touch with a palm tree on each pitch. The pitches with loose gravel are located along several streets which are well-illuminated. In the centre of the camping site are a number of colourful wooden bungalows in a row.
Arabian atmosphere in the mountains
A short drive towards the north brings you to Granada where the Alhambra towers above the city. This impressive palace complex from the times of the Moors in on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

We were pleased to find this site as we wanted to stay somewhere which was not overly large and with a mix of nationalities unlike the German dominance which we had experienced at other sites whilst travelling down the coast from Barcelona. The plots are level and spacious with every one fully serviced with water, electricity and foul drainage. Most unusual and convenient. The facilities‘ block is excellent with plenty of hot water but with one small criticism – namely that there is no provision for wiping the floors after showering. There is a good restaurant and very friendly/helpful reception staff. Fresh bread daily. Plenty of dogs so don’t come on site if you don’t like dogs. Most plots are separated by Jasmine hedges. Very well positioned for walking/Cycling into Balerma with nice promenade and good supermarket. There is also a very lovely cycle ride to Almerima including a long distance along a new cycleway having Avenue of palm trees and adjoining coast. The town has a beautiful smart marina and tapas bars. We stayed at this site longer than we had intended. Many to whom we spoke, were returning from previous visits.
A well appointed campsite with good facilities and friendly staff. The nearby town has nothing really to offer and you are surrounded by poly-tunnels. The only real negative for us was that the water tasted funny (almost like sea water) but this will not deter us from using it again.
Brilliant campsite, roomy pitches and the toilet/shower facilities are one of the cleanest we have encountered. Quiet site which we like. WIFI very good on all pitches. The only thing if you have no transportation is that Balerma is very small although there is a Consum but you need to be able to get out and about if staying for more than a few days.
We visited in early July so outside ACSI discount period, having said that we think the prices very favourable for the facilities provided
The showers are excellent, the first encountered with splash screens, sockets I can actually reach (one site they were so high a 6 footer would have struggled!)
A pleasant bar serving snacks and meals
Only downside was the confusing bus timetable which indicated a 930am bus to El Ejido and never arrived When I looked later online it was 9am!
This is our favourite in Spain, very clean, near to a small very Spanish town, local Consum supermarket, all you need for a great holiday.
This is not a review of the campsite facilities as we turned around at the gate but more a view on the location of the site. There is no mention in the ACSI book or previous reviews that it is surrounded by miles of white plastic greenhouses in a less than picturesque and barren landscape. The whole scenery along the A7 between Almeria and Motril (and beyond) is blighted by plastic tents, it isn't a journey we will repeat.
Nice site pitches a little on the small side. Restaurant good, fresh bread sold daily. Toilets and showers good plenty of hot water. Good cycling.
stayed on this campsite for one night in January 2017.
GOOD:- clean, hot showers
great on site cafe - excellent coffee and good staff
beach just across the road to walk the dog
go north on A7 to J409 for a really good LIDL and Carrefour
the campsite had a power cut for about 1and a half hours, the staff were brilliant in the cafe, they provided candles and free food
BAD:- not a pretty beach
nothing in the small town you pass through before the campsite
although the shower block is heated, the doors and windows were constantly left open
you pay extra for electricity
an awful smell of manure, which I think came from the plastic greenhouses
Our first visit and we were impressed with the facility's which are very modern the shower block was spotless with hot water always available also a dog wash and good child facilities and good sized pitches. The staff were very friendly and the bar area was pleasant with good basic food served. The town was very quite while we were there but had good supermarket about 20 min walk, 10 klm to the East is Almerimar which has a lovely marina with plenty of restaurants/cafe bars. The campsite is surrounded by poly tunnels but there are good views of the mountains and after a while they didn't seem as noticeable. We will definitely be returning sooner rather than later!
If you are traveling through Almeria , It is a gem of a site. Helpful staff. Excellent facilities, The owner is always looking to improve this excellent site, We will return.
