Booked to stay a week at Holiday Resort Unity. I must admit, the name sounds like it’s some form of Christian Cult, but it’s not. Having stayed previously at nearby Warren Farm, I had hoped this would be similar but it’s not. This site is much bigger and definitely aimed at families with young children.
We are in ‘The Brown Field’ which is allegedly dog friendly, but sadly the place feels much more like dogs tolerated. For such a large site, there is no where you can actually let your dog off lead to exercise. There is a dog walk advertised, and that is literally what it is, a narrow path, up against the hedges where you can walk the dog and let him attend to his ablutions. Considering how massive this park is it’s quite disappointing. But I guess they just want to squeeze as many pitches into the park as possible, and their focus is definitely not on dogs, their needs and their owners. And there is just one dog friendly cafe, open 9 to 5. Dogs are not allowed in the other retail and eating places, which are plentiful and varied.
The other thing I’ve noticed, having got up to take my dog for a walk on the beach this morning, the maps are definitely not to scale either. So don’t be fooled. If you are in ‘The Brown Field’ it’s a solid 10, maybe 15 minute walk to the park entrance, depending on your mobility, and another solid 10 to 15 minute walk to the beach. The beach access path just opposite the park is quite hard going over some sand dunes. I found there is a much easier route if you turn right out the entrance and about 40 to 50 yards away there is a municipal car park entrance to the beach, with a road to a pub/cafe that is flat with access for cars to the beach. It was a lot easier coming back that way than going over those dunes.
To be fair to HRU (as they abbreviate themselves), the showers and toilets are clean, and there is plenty of hot water. There is a Cost Cutter on site that it halfway to the site entrance, where there is also a fish and chip shop. That will be for another day. This place is targeted at caravan holidays, al la Haven and Park Dean. With a huge entertainment venue and programme aimed at trying to keep you on site. If you like that type of thing, then this is the place for you. Not my ‘thing’ at all.
Great site big pitch’s great for dog walks only 2 mins away from beach loads of bars and shops on the door step.Next door is a good fun fair and a good Sunday market great bus service just outside the site entertainment at night is great for both adults and kids
This was by far the best site we stayed at out of the 10 we visited on a three week holiday to England and Wales. The wardens on the Brown Field were fantastic. The shower and bathroom facilities spotless. There was even a free mini bus at night to take us to the on-site entertainment venues. We stayed on the Camping Card and it was very good value. We loved it so much that we extended our stay by two days.
Lovely flat site. Visited in the week so no children on site, I imagine it gets very busy in peak times. It's opposite the beach and near all thinks along the seafront.
The clubhouse seemed popular.
As we had a Hobby caravan we where turned round at the gate, they do not accept continental caravans. I can't understand why ACSI have listed this site as the majority of it's members are from the continent!
Being a elderly couple with a small caravan we travelled down from York to visit this site around march 2013 for 7 days, We liked the surrounding area being in easy reach of Cheddar gorge, Minehead and Lynmouth the steam railway train that goes into Minehead is a real treat as is the scenery in that part of the Country whilst the Shopping area`s, especially Burnham on sea with compact shopping area`s and 4 large supermarket's to choose from is ideal being Elderly as the relaxed and slower pace was perfect, we loved it so much we revisited the site again just before the high season started and there was a wonderful era of country and western music festival on with lots of people dressing up as the old western hero's we were brought up to admire in our younger days. Hopefully this will be repeated in 2014 and we will be there again if health permits at 74 years young.
