Unsafe, Poorly Maintained Campsite – Feels Stuck in the 1970s
⸻
Safety Concerns
• Two of us were scalded in the “new” showers whenever someone flushed a toilet.
• Exposed wires and broken electric points were visible throughout the site.
• Our only available pitch (after a booking error) had a six-foot drop with live electrics nearby — extremely worrying with children and dogs.
• The compound is locked at midnight with no automatic gate, so you cannot leave in an emergency.
• The site is situated directly under pylons, which is not mentioned anywhere.
⸻
Facilities & Maintenance
• Shower heads were blocked with limescale, sprayed water everywhere, and were mounted too high for shorter guests. There was no lighting in the block at night.
• Water taps and electric points often didn’t work; when they did, they kept tripping the fuses due to too many people using one supply. They advertise 6 amps, but it didn’t feel anywhere near that — preparing meals could take hours.
• The pool was only open 12–5 pm, with nowhere to sit except gritty floor or sparse grass. It was dirty and the water felt salty from sweat.
• The Elsan disposal point was awkwardly positioned and had little for cleaning your toilet.
• The older toilet and shower blocks were dire and smelled strongly of sewage.
• Washing-up facilities were in poor condition, though there was always hot water at the sinks (one positive).
⸻
Site Environment
• Pitches were dusty, uneven, and poorly maintained — some guests used pallets as flooring.
• Overhanging branches made manoeuvring caravans and motorhomes difficult.
• When it rained, the site became a muddy mess due to lack of proper drainage or hardstanding.
• Lighting across the site was poor, and the atmosphere unpleasant, with some visitors using foul and abusive language in front of — and at times directed towards — our children.
⸻
Booking & Management
• Our pre-booked pitch was double-booked.
• We were allocated an unsafe plot with little concern for our safety or comfort.
• Check-in and check-out were painfully slow due to inefficient systems.
• No welcome pack, site rules, or orientation were provided.
To be clear, we don’t blame the staff on site — they were doing their best. But management and the owner need to take these comments seriously and modernise the site; at times it felt like we’d stepped into the sitcom Hi-de-Hi.
⸻
Overall
We’ve camped widely, and this is the first site where we felt genuinely unsafe. Until major improvements are made to safety, facilities, drainage, and customer care, we cannot recommend this campsite.
