A pitch for your own camping equipment

Every year, many of us love hitting the road with our tent, caravan, campervan, or trailer tent. You've packed everything—perhaps using our handy checklist—and you’re ready to go. While many campers head south for the sun, more and more are choosing to stay closer to home or explore the peaceful landscapes of Scandinavia.

How to choose a pitch?

No matter where you go, a good pitch is essential. Some prefer a basic pitch, while others opt for more space and comfort, such as a larger pitch with private facilities. Knowing your preferences will help you find the perfect camping spot.

Consider the following when choosing a pitch:

• Think about the size of your tent, campervan, or caravan and ensure there’s enough space. You’ll want room to sit comfortably and possibly set up an awning or canopy.
• Decide on the facilities you need. Would you prefer to be close to amenities or further away for peace and privacy? Do you need an electricity hookup, or do you prefer a more off-grid experience?
• Consider the location. Do you want a shady spot, or do you prefer full sun to make the most of warm weather?
• If you’re travelling with children, proximity to play areas or pools might be an important factor.

The right size

The ideal pitch size depends on your camping setup and personal preferences. Here are some guidelines for different types of camping equipment:

• Tent: A pitch of around 80m² is usually sufficient for a spacious tent with room for an awning or table. If you’re using a small two-person tent, many campsites have designated areas where you can choose your own spot among fellow campers.
• Campervans and caravans: Most are between 6 and 8 metres long and around 2.5 metres wide, so you’ll need at least 80m² of space. If your vehicle is longer, look for pitches of at least 100m². This allows for a comfortable setup, including space for an awning or privacy area.

Popular destinations

Now that you know what to look for in a pitch, it's time to choose a destination. Not sure where to go? Consider the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, and Croatia—popular camping destinations for good reason! These countries offer well-maintained campsites with excellent facilities, plus stunning landscapes to explore:

• Netherlands: Flat landscapes, great cycling routes, and beautiful nature reserves make the Netherlands a top choice for campers. Explore the Veluwe’s forests or the water landscapes of Friesland.
