The well maintained family campsite Le Lidon is located in Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud, the marshy part of the Marais Poitevin. The campsite is an oasis of peace and quiet. The camping pitches are spacious (90 - 120 m2), although there is little or no demarcation. There is ample shade everywhere. Some pitches are adjacent to the small canal. On the campsite (some 3 ha) there are rental mobile homes, some of which look like a gypsy caravan. You can also hire several types of tents.

Lovely swimming and food

There is a small lawn near the heated swimming pool (160 m2) with toddler pool. There are water aerobics lessons and water polo competitions in the pool in peak season. Next to the campsite is a restaurant/bar with a small menu. They also do take-away meals. There is a limited choice of regional products, but fresh bread is available on a daily basis.

Entertainment for all

There is a small playground for children and an entertainment programme in peak season (English and French). Take part in the outdoor games and party games. From the campsite you can follow signposted cycling and walking routes. You can make a boat or canoe trip from the jetty to one of the canals of the Marais Poitevin Nature Reserve. The nature area is also excellent for walking.

Join a skipper

The wetland region of Marais Poitevin is also referred to as the 'Venice of France'. The region knows three zones: a coastal zone, the reclaimed marshland and the wet marshland. Highly recommended: explore the marshy regions with a punt (a traditional flat-bottom boat) with a skipper and pay a visit to the Abbey of the Marai in Maillezais.

"Quiet, cosy and natural campsite in the rural area of the Marais (= lots of water). Swimming pool and children's pool. Nice toilet block. Many fishing possibilities, ideal for cycling. Rental of boats and canoes."

Liked - Tranquility, simplicity, environment. We had hoped to arrive at the campsite early afternoon but an earlier delay caused us to arrive early evening. We couldn’t make use of the river or take a bike ride as we had hoped. Reception were friendly and helpful. Would have been nice to stop longer. A good site for family time (poor mobile data signal). Games room at le lidon in better condition than the 4 star coastal site we had been to.
Disliked - We weren’t sure where to go or what to do once we had arrived. Went to the restaurant (closest to the gate), we were advised to drive through the gate and go to reception. Gate didn’t open so reversed caravan out, a car went through, gate opened, tried again, gate didn’t open. Someone from reception came out and advised we parked in the car park and walked to reception to check in. We did and after could drive in. Access very tight for a 7.5m caravan a longer twin axle caravan could be a problem.

Liked - The staff were incredible - so helpful and friendly and always keeping everything clean etc
Disliked - I would have liked the restaurant to have had a little more choice and be open more hours (it may not have been as we were there end of season)

Liked - Quite, although fairly busy. We came here a few years ago and it was very quite and we loved that about the site. Even though much busier we enjoyed our week and would certainly return again.
