If you want a quiet and relaxing break, don't go here. This is not a 5 star resort. The tent pitches are in very bad condition, mucky and full of stones. They are also very close to one another with no private space. We refused to pitch here, customer service would not give us a refund despite not being fit for service. If you're planning on visiting here with a tent, avoid at all costs. Do not book in advance or online, you won't get a refund if you ask.
The campsite was easy to find - you have to park in a parking area about 50m away from the entrance and walk to the reception to check in. Note, the reception and barriers are closed between 1pm and 3pm each day so you cannot get a vehicle in or out of the site between these times. This is a huge campsite, more like a village (even has houses and a church) and a cycle comes in very handy to get around.
During school holidays it is also a very busy site, but because of how people are allowed to pitch on top of each other I would not recommend anyone going here. There is absolutely no safety or privacy at all - people pitch their 'accommodation' on top of each other. Many caravans are so close that open windows touch the one behind, or to the side, the motorhomes are parked nose to tail. In most places there was no more than 1 or 2 metre gaps between any of the tents. I would like to know what the local council and fire department's recommendations are - in the UK the average is around 5m. If there was ever a fire on this site, I'm afraid it would spread quite rapidly..
Other than the potential dangers, this isn't a bad campsite. It is full of children enjoying themselves, whizzing round on bikes, scooters etc., so you need to be careful when driving around. The two lakes looked like fun, we didn't go in, but there were always people in there. Obviously because the campsite is so big it can get noisy at night, especially as you are pitched so very close together. The sanitary facilities however, are exemplary, there are eight huge blocks, always absolutely spotlessly clean and very spacious and always plenty of hot water. The two restaurants were good, and good value for money. The shop is well stocked. The reception people were helpful when I needed anything.
The surrounding area has nice safe cycling tracks, especially along the river. There is a well stocked Activ supermarket in Stolhoffen and an Aldi in Hugelsheim. The nearest garage is also in Hugelsheim.
It is a shame the overcrowding is so bad, I would have liked to go there again..
Excellent campsite, but remember to take insect repellent, as the insects have a fierce bite. The facilties were spotless.
