In the east of the tourist Tirol region, on the south side of the mighty Grossglockner, lies Nationalparkcamping Kals. You camp here on a low lying field or on one of the terraces. The campsite is popular with nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. With ski pistes galore, walking and cycling paths (from easy to strenuous) in the immediate vicinity of the campsite, there is no need to be bored.

Camping amidst the mountains

On campsite Nationalparkcamping Kals you can choose your own pitch. This can be down on the campsite or up on one of the terraces. Although the pitches are not demarcated, you will have ample privacy. This is because the pitches are very spacious. The pitches are level with a grass surface, but vegetation is limited because of the high altitude of the campsite.

There are more than one hundred touring pitches. The campsite does not offer rental accommodation, so you have to bring your own tent, trailer tent, motorhome or caravan.

Winter sport paradise

Winter sport enthusiasts will appreciate the shuttle bus which travels between the campsite to the pistes. However, even if you do not like snow that much, you can indulge in other sporty activities. You can go walking or cycling, for instance. On the campsite and in the village of Kals you will also come across many mountaineering fanatics. There is not a great deal to do on the campsite for children, but there is a playground within a two minute walk from the grounds.

Restaurants in Kals

There is no restaurant on the campsite, but you will find a few eating establishments in the village of Kals. You can also do your shopping in Kals.

Travelling party: Family with children, 4 – 12 years

Liked - Staff, cleanliness of the bathrooms, comfort although the camping was full, in general very quiet visitors (no parties or loud music). Ideal location in the Osttirol. Good mix of caravans and tents (not the typical holiday camping full of caravans or bungalows). The reception offers some groceries and cold beverages (at fair prices) if you don't have a cooler with you.
Disliked - Just to mention something, the internet connection was poor even in the surroundings of the reception (no chance to get it where we had the tent), but let's be honest, going to such a place for spending the time with internet is not the best you can do, and apart from that, with free europe roaming nowadays for most people this wouldn't be a problem.

Travelling party: Family with children, 4 – 12 years

Liked - Amazing views all around the campsite; friendly and accommodating staff. Due to our overall itinerary, our visit here was only 3 nights - definitely too short, next time I would come for longer, especially because one day was quite poor weather.
Disliked - Wi-fi is in the dishwashing room, not throughout the campground. There is no playground for the kids on the campground itself. But a short walk ways (5 min) is a nature trail aimed for kids activities -- and there is of course nature itself.

Travelling party: Family with children, 12 - 18 years

Liked - an amazing view from the site, in the heart of the mountains and a fantastic base for walking
Disliked - only the weather was a little cold in summer - but what can you expect a few thousand metres up in the mountains!
