Camping La Bien-Assise issituated close to the centre of Guînes, a village not far from Calais. The castle camping site is therefore popular with British tourists for whom this is the first (or last) stopover in France. The camping site is located in an attractive, rather flat, rural area. The grounds are dominated by large trees and look very attractive. The rural setting will give you an immediate French holiday feeling, while the coast of the English Channel is not far away.
Camping site and sanitary facilities
There are 46 mobile homes on the camping site which are fitted with all amenities. There are also four wooden, fully furnished rental holiday cottages. Other camping guests have access to good and modern sanitary facilities in the service building.
Because camping La Bien-Assise is not directly situated on the sea, a lake or river, it has a covered swimming pool with large water slide. However, at a distance of only 16 km, you will find Escalles and Cap Blanc-Nez, where you can spend the day on the beach. Wimereux and Sangatte are located at similar distances.
On the grounds you will also find the three-star hotel L’auberge du Colombier, located in a small 19th century castle, as well as the restaurant La Ferme Gourmande. The restaurant serves classic French dishes, also on the terrace when the weather allows it. From here you have a view of the castle's dovecote. There is a cosy bar near the reception (with a small library).
As is the case at most camping sites, camping La Bien-Assise also has its own small shop. Are you looking for a larger assortment? In Guînes itself there is a variety of supermarkets and typical French shops.

We stay here on route to the South of France and again on route home to the Channel Tunnel, stayed on pitch and in Chateau and have never had a problem. Great camping site, the onsite Restaurant is a gem and is a must do! 'FOOD IS FAB' we have never had anything but first class food and service after numerous visits, the locals eat here which is the best endorsement. So book in advance it’s always very busy. The facilities are very good and have always been clean and tidy.
Good stop over site. Close to road so some road noise at night. Lovely maintained site. Clean toilets. Nickname Little Britain. Close to Eurotunnel.
I can't for the life of me think what makes this campsite 5* - I've stayed at better 2* sites. Given that the pitches are large, they are not very well screened and since this is primarily a 'transit camp' for people arriving off or leaving on the ferries, it is noisy at night. The toilets are cleaned regularly and some do have seats, but the blocks are dilapidated and in urgent need of refurbishment. The food at the on-site Restaurant, La Ferme Gourmande is indifferent and expensive; indeed the main gripe is the exorbitant price charged for the pitch itself is just not worth it.
12kms from Eurotunnel and 19kms from the ferry makes this a very convenient site to stay – and it’s a great site into the bargain. We arrived ‘on spec’ at about 2pm, checking in was very efficient and we were shown to our pitch. The site is large and very well laid out with large grassy pitches and it seemed as if they kept the one-nighters like us near the entrance which is a good idea so we didn’t disturb the long term stays. There are 3 shower/wc blocks (not unisex), at least one of which is heated. I used an unheated block and it was reasonably clean but certainly not up to 5 star standard, which is what the site claims to be. Other amenities include a children’s playground, 5 adult outdoor fitness apparatuses, indoor swimming pool with sliding roof & small waterslide, table tennis table, Snack bar, Take away, Bread ordering facility, small shop and restaurant. We opted to used the snack bar – limited menu - food was ok but we were impressed by the very hardworking man who was the barman and waiter.
Used site for a one night stopover travelling south. Very professional site, well run if a little impersonal. Everything we asked for. The motorhome service point has been upgraded and is now first class.
used this site for 2 stopovers, had site with water & drainage, only problem was waste pipe had to run uphill, & water won't, another drawback, had to use chocks to level caravan, lastly, which was unusual for a 5star site was only 6amp electricity, apart form that excellent, the site is very handy for Calais ferry or tunnel, everything else was very good
Very good site. Pitches are well maintained and the toilet facilities are very good. Would use this site again. One small point of criticism is that the WIFI access for one hour cards at least do not allow you to log in and out.
Just the usual overnighter last night. Friendly staff and terrific meal in the restaurant, however the sanitary facilities have changed little since 1999 which is strange given the move to 5 star rating. Whilst other aspects are important for longer stays sanitaries are top priority for however long the stay.
Going through showers/toilet areas to wash up is not acceptable these days.
The night before we stayed in a 2 star site which had far superior sanitary facilities.
A lovely clean site .the staff were very helpfull.a very nice area, very handy for the channel tunnel and ferries.
We stayed here a year ago and didn't have a great time but the handy location, 15 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal, drew us back again. Unfortunately we encountered exactly the same problems as before. The maze of showers and sinks are cold, dirty and old. Certainly a long way from the 5-star facilities that the site claims to have. In fact, these were the worst toilet blocks of all the 7 sites on our trip. The pitches themselves were great, grassy, marked with hedges, plenty of water points etc. however, as with our last visit, we were kept awake at night by loutish behaviour from other campers. I suppose the site suffers as a result of its easy-to-get-to location from England but a fair few of the 'campers', particularly in the numerous Eurocamp tents, were just there to get very drunk on cheap drink. I've seldom felt so ashamed to be British. We won't be back again.
