By chance we stumbled across this campsite but were pleasantly surprised. The site is small but is beautifully located in the foothills of the Picos. There is a mountain stream at the bottom of the site that is accessible for paddling and swimming. The facilities are well looked after. The site is well placed for trips into the mountains and close to the funicular train to Bulnes. The village of Arenas de Cabrales is only a short walk away and is well served with many cafes and restaurants. All in all a lovely spot.
We chose this site because of its location. Just a short drive to the car parks for the walks to Bulnes and Garganta del Cares.
The site is located on the outskirts of Arenas de Cabrales, a small town with a couple of medium sized supermarkets, several souvenir shops and restaurants. The site straddles both sides of the main road.
Reception - There was a warm welcome from the lady in reception who spoke a little bit of English. She was very helpful and provided us with maps showing local walks in the area. There was also a good stock of leaflets promoting other attractions.
Pitches - We stayed in the low season so only half the site was open. The pitches are numbered and were a good size and we had no problem staying within our boundaries.
The facilities were clean but rustic and in need of a refit. Changing space within the shower cubicles was very tight and very low pressure water flow through the shower.
The site bar is next to reception. There is a good range of beers and wines plus the local cidre. The menu is a bit basic but no worse than other restaurants in the area. You can also buy fresh bread from the bar each morning.
There is another restaurant adjacent to the site which has a more extensive menu. I tried the Fabada (stew with beans, chorizo and black pudding) which was very nice.
WiFi and Phone
Free wifi access around the bar area.
The site is not affiliated to ACSI and does not accept camping cheques and is therefore more expensive than other sites. During the low season we paid almost twice as much as we had been paying on ACSI sites. In my opinion the nightly fee was too high given the poor standard of sanitary facilities. However, it is the only site in this area.
An excellent base for hiking in the Picos de Europa region. The site is on both sides of the main road; I stayed in the southern half (opposite the reception), which has a slightly more spacious feel to it. Sanitary facilities are clean and well maintained, but have cold water only (except for showers).
