You will be camping at a quiet, well-maintained campsite just 300 metres from a beautiful beach on the rugged north coast of Spain. The beautiful city of Santander is within cycling distance. At Virgen del Mar Campsite, you can take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool and enjoy a delicious meal at the restaurant. A great base from which to explore Cantabria. Hikers and cyclists will find nice routes here and there is a beautiful course nearby for golfers.

Spot in the grass

What really stands out about the site are the many plants and shrubs. All pitches are spacious and neatly laid out on narrow streets. You will have beautiful green grass under your feet. Most camping pitches are not demarcated. Those with large campers should practice caution when driving past the trees. There is a large sanitary building on the campsite that looks neat and is clean. In addition to the touring pitches, the campsite also offers the option to enjoy your holiday in one of the 40 furnished bungalows or mobile homes.

Cooling off

The big advantage at Virgen del Mar Campsite is that you can either swim in the pool or walk 300 metres to the beach and take a dip in the Cantabrian Sea. Just watch out for the rocks and the often strong current there. You also won't want to miss the lookout point at the tip of Isla Virgen del Mar. There are several beautiful beaches a little further away, including Playa de la Arnía and Playa de San Juan de la Canal.

Travelling party: Group of friends

We arrived without a booking on Sunday, the 24th of August 2025.
[The feedback is based on comments of all people staying - 4 family members, all adults.]
Location is very good - near Santander and about 100km from Bilbao. There is a nearby beach (short walking distance away, approx 350m) with a very good restaurant. It was very busy so we went to the beach swimming early in the morning.
Check-in was easy, friendly staff in reception.
We had 4 adults in a motorhome (+electric) and 2 small tents - it cost us 88 euro for two plots. Turned out to be the most expensive stay ever in a campsite in Spain this year. But the location made it worth it.
The pitches are tight, be mindful, one motorhome nearly ripped the side apart trying to reverse into a plot. Some trees just seem to be in the wrong place to be able to park up with a longer vehicle.
The ground was soft, and we had grass ;)
The campsite was quiet, no disturbances at all. Watched local wildlife - the lizard on the wall was quite amusing!
Facilities were good - toilets and showers were clean at all times but several showers had broken fixings, easy to improve that.
The motorhome toilet emptying place was very dirty in the morning, but giving the benefit of doubt that maybe we just happened to be there in-between the cleaning/checking. And some people just don't clean up after themselves.
We did not use the pool so won't comment.
Small shop on site, always appreciated.
The bar/restaurant - not sure if considered part of the campsite but we liked it. Really nice, very cold beers. The only thing is that picture of pizza on menu did not correspond to what we received. Ordered the same pizza again, specifically calling out the item on the pizza - green peppers, same type pizza arrived. We made it into holiday mission/game to find green peppers on pizza then :D Hot sauce for chips was delicious!
So - overall - 4 stars for the campsite (price v facilities v location). Recommend to stay and we will return!

Could be a lovely campsite but they have squeezed far too many pitches into available space!! Far too narrow and tree planting has made access and egress impossible for anything but caravans with movers.

Great campsite, especially for Santander but would be great anywhere. Excellent on site restaurant with great staff. Lovely surrounding area with a lovely coastline and beach.

Exceptionally small pitches, on the first row we could hardly open the door without hitting the vehicle next to us.

There is another field, and here we had real problems - the pitches are again narrow, hemmed in by trees, and together with the very narrow road, extremely difficult to get in and out of.

To make matters worse, the ground can become totally waterlogged. There are concrete tracks for the wheels (narrow, of course!) albeit by no means level - but stray off these while manoeuvring, and you are trapped in mud. As the trees grow it will be even more difficult.

The campsite workers seemed to spend most of their time freeing stuck vehicles. Combined with the high price, we will not be returning.

Negatives; very, very small pitches! We only had a VW Camper but there wasn’t enough room to put the roll out awning up. Immature trees / hedges between the pitches means you have a little more room but no privacy whatsoever. The whole site felt and looked tired. The shower block and pool were clean but very dated so didn’t look the best.
Positive; the location! 5 minute walk to an amazing beach / cove. The location alone will probably mean we will visit again but only for 1 or 2 nights.

We called the site to book a pitch for 8 nights, but we’re told it was ok at the time of year (18th September) to just turn up.
So we turned up and there were approximately 8 pitches available, as due to heavy rain the previous few days, a lot of pitches were cordoned off, to allow them to dry out.
We pitched our caravan on pitch 147, which is facing the chemical waste and grey waste facilities, as this looked the biggest.
My husband pitched the caravan as close to the branches of the trees, and some of the thicker branches would have damaged the caravan.
The pitch wasn’t physically big enough to put the car beside it, so he parked it away in the corner, where the pitches were drying out.
The owner very grumpily said if he wanted to park his car there, then we had to pay twice!! But we had paid for a caravan and car and 2 adults!!
My husband didn’t want any confrontation, so parked his car for 8 days in the car park about 0.5 mile away. Which was inconvenient when we went out, and a security risk.
Our friends arrived 2 days later and they had a motorhome which they parked easily, but they couldn’t extend their awning/canopy as again the pitches were too small.
The site is surrounded by farm land and out buildings, and consequently had guard dogs, who consistently barked throughout the evening. We had to buy ear plugs.
So now for the positives.
The site is in a beautiful location and very close to other areas of natural outstanding beauty, and also close to the city and the ferry port.
The reception staff and restaurant staff were also very friendly and helpful,
The pitches even though extremely small (the smallest we’ve ever encountered) were well maintained and were quite level.
The swimming pool and toilet facilities, were looking tired, but immaculately clean.

Difficult but manageable to park in these narrow and tree bound plots (7.7m Motorhome) grey waste facility difficult to use. restaurant was poor. toilet and shower facilities clean and tidy. overall good for a stopover prior to ferry(25 mins away)

great location, tightly packed in with trees and branches making parking difficult . Quiet site. no dogs allowed but still some local dogs. toilet block clean but water can be hot or luke warm. A bit pricey in October but they have the monopoly. Fresh bread in morning- can cycle to a supermarket as camp shop sparse.
