Detail information about this campsite

R.P. Schweinsbergen

"An elongated camp site with pitches offering much privacy. The sanitary facilities are beautiful. Folkestone and Dover as well as Canterbury are in the immediate neighbourhood. Deal is a beautiful town at the coast. The rail station is located about 0.5 km from the camp site. There is a train to London every hour. The train journey takes about 1.5 hours."

Smith Family, on this campsite in August 2014

Travelling party: Family with children, 12 - 18 years

Hawthorn Farm campsite is ideally situated for the ferry terminal at Dover, being only a few minutes drive away. The Eurotunnel terminal near Folkestone can also be reached in about 20 minutes (unless you hit traffic disembarking the ferry on the way). A pitch can be booked in advance by telephone, but the campsite also has a late arrivals field which relies on an \"honesty box\". You pitch up in the field alongside the site cafe, place your money in an envelope along with your vehicle registration number, and pop it in the reception letter box.

Short stay campers are generally placed in one of the pitches alongside the railway line, and you can choose any of the pitches in this area. The pitches are grass (and they also have hardstanding pitches) and a good size, with a line of trees separating the site from the railway line, and hedges offering privacy from adjacent campers. The trains are quite frequent, but do not cause much of a problem as they stop before midnight.

An on-site cafe offers meals throughout the day at a reasonable price. For around £7 each, we had very good, filling meals served by friendly and chatty staff. The cafe is also the site shop, stocking all the essentials, and a bit more besides. The toilets and showers are plentiful and kept clean.

This site is a great stopover for getting an early start when traveling on to France, and it is difficult to find anything negative to say about it when used for this purpose. Perhaps the shower blocks could do with refurbishment, and there is no pub within a reasonable walking distance.
