Travelling party: Family with children, 4 – 12 years

I needed a stopping point for the journey from Strasbourg to Venice. This is ideally placed for that but is so much more than a stopping point. What a location. Soaring mountains, stream fed crystal clear lakes, forests, wildlife, all stunningly beautiful. The approach to the campsite takes you through Heiterwang village. The access roads are narrow, so care must be taken. The lake is popular with tourists and locals alike, but they don’t intrude on the camp site itself.
The campsite staff are very friendly and multi-lingual. We were shown to our pitch which was quietly situated by a slowly flowing stream.
The toilets, chemical disposal, showers and ablutions were very clean. The water point and grey water point were slightly difficult to access as we have big containers, but no problems. The site office can pre-order bread, but the site as a whole would be 10/10 if it had a shop. The nearest small supermarket is about 5km away.
The site itself has an good playground for the children with an ice cream kiosk. The site also accommodates a very posh looking looking spa hotel. I glanced over the restaurant menu and although it was priced typically for Austria, it looked excellent.
The walking and mountain biking round the lake is epic, but wear long trousers because the horseflies bite. Not many mossies though. The lake and rivers are so therapeutic, you feel the travelling miles just slip away. Swimming in the lake is excellent although it is cold, so care should be taken.
Further afield, the scenery is astonishing. We tried to go and see the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Castle about 20km away, but the approach access and parking is very difficult.
We stayed three nights and could have done a week. If you are travelling through the Tirol, then stop and stay here for three or four nights. It is worth it. We will be back.
