You will be camping at a quiet, well-maintained campsite just 300 metres from a beautiful beach on the rugged north coast of Spain. The beautiful city of Santander is within cycling distance. At Virgen del Mar Campsite, you can take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool and enjoy a delicious meal at the restaurant. A great base from which to explore Cantabria. Hikers and cyclists will find nice routes here and there is a beautiful course nearby for golfers.

Spot in the grass

What really stands out about the site are the many plants and shrubs. All pitches are spacious and neatly laid out on narrow streets. You will have beautiful green grass under your feet. Most camping pitches are not demarcated. Those with large campers should practice caution when driving past the trees. There is a large sanitary building on the campsite that looks neat and is clean. In addition to the touring pitches, the campsite also offers the option to enjoy your holiday in one of the 40 furnished bungalows or mobile homes.

Cooling off

The big advantage at Virgen del Mar Campsite is that you can either swim in the pool or walk 300 metres to the beach and take a dip in the Cantabrian Sea. Just watch out for the rocks and the often strong current there. You also won't want to miss the lookout point at the tip of Isla Virgen del Mar. There are several beautiful beaches a little further away, including Playa de la Arnía and Playa de San Juan de la Canal.

Had to think about this before I posted it. Last week we stayed in the camping virgen de Mer as our over night before the sunday ferry. We received a text to say that the ferry was going 1 hour earlier than scheduled. It was our first time going through this port and we were worried about finding our way around. We made the decision to get up early and leave loads of time. At 8am we got up to be told by another couple that the massive security gate was broken and we had no way out. Went looking for staff. There were none. Started ringing a landline. No answer. Started ringing what we assumed was an out of hours mobile number. It rang out about 4 times through before I was blocked. Starting to panic we and the 3 other couples started to try find any way out. Back gate also locked. Couldn\'t push or pull the main gate open (I have zero experience with electric gates) whatapp\'d the mobile number to say there was an emergency on site. Boarding was closing at 10.15. First staff due in (we thought) at 10. Walked the site and knocked on mobile homes with cars outside. No luck. Walked the road to see if any houses near by. No luck. 9.40 and pure panic stations. I rang my family in ireland and my brother in law was able to talk me through what to do to override the system. 3 campers went at serious speed through the town to get there with 10 mins to spare. Decided to ring the campsite to explain the situation and to recommend that they start answering there phone in an emergency and I got pure abused. I explained what happened and the end result was she laughed at me and asked what my problem was. She refused to believe me about the ferry was leaving early as her friend worked there and I was lying. Told me I should have just fixed the gate. Also phone hours start at 10am and they wouldn\'t be answered before that. I asked what would happen in an out of hours emergency and she said it was not her problem. She then hung up on me. This might be a once off, but serious concerns about the security and safety of that site made me compose this message. Amazingly I started to get messages apologising once the lady realised she was totally out of order. So please approach with caution.

We called the site to book a pitch for 8 nights, but we’re told it was ok at the time of year (18th September) to just turn up.
So we turned up and there were approximately 8 pitches available, as due to heavy rain the previous few days, a lot of pitches were cordoned off, to allow them to dry out.
We pitched our caravan on pitch 147, which is facing the chemical waste and grey waste facilities, as this looked the biggest.
My husband pitched the caravan as close to the branches of the trees, and some of the thicker branches would have damaged the caravan.
The pitch wasn’t physically big enough to put the car beside it, so he parked it away in the corner, where the pitches were drying out.
The owner very grumpily said if he wanted to park his car there, then we had to pay twice!! But we had paid for a caravan and car and 2 adults!!
My husband didn’t want any confrontation, so parked his car for 8 days in the car park about 0.5 mile away. Which was inconvenient when we went out, and a security risk.
Our friends arrived 2 days later and they had a motorhome which they parked easily, but they couldn’t extend their awning/canopy as again the pitches were too small.
The site is surrounded by farm land and out buildings, and consequently had guard dogs, who consistently barked throughout the evening. We had to buy ear plugs.
So now for the positives.
The site is in a beautiful location and very close to other areas of natural outstanding beauty, and also close to the city and the ferry port.
The reception staff and restaurant staff were also very friendly and helpful,
The pitches even though extremely small (the smallest we’ve ever encountered) were well maintained and were quite level.
The swimming pool and toilet facilities, were looking tired, but immaculately clean.

Sehr schöner, ruhiger und gepflegter Platz. Schöner Pool, sauberes Sanitär. Gute Ausgangslage für Santander. Preis /Leistung absolut in Ordnung. Wir waren nicht essen, und haben keine Kinder, daher je nur 1 Stern.

great location, tightly packed in with trees and branches making parking difficult . Quiet site. no dogs allowed but still some local dogs. toilet block clean but water can be hot or luke warm. A bit pricey in October but they have the monopoly. Fresh bread in morning- can cycle to a supermarket as camp shop sparse.
