8 quiet beaches in southern France
3 March, 2023 | Update: 21/07/2025
Planning a beach holiday to the south of France and hoping to avoid the crowds? You’ll find beautiful, tranquil beaches that haven’t been overrun by mass tourism. Discover these hidden gems along the Côte d’Azur. Reaching them may take a bit more effort, but the views are often absolutely breathtaking. Let me take you to eight peaceful and picturesque beaches in southern France, including several along the Côte d’Azur. I’ll also share tips for nearby campsites where you can stay close to these stunning spots.
8 beautiful, quiet beaches in southern France
- Calanque d’En-Vau
- Plage de la Plonche, near St. Tropez
- Plage de La Fosse, Cap Ferrat
- Plage Mala, Cap d’Ail
- Plage Notre Dame, Île de Porquerolles
- Plage de la Gaillarde, near Fréjus
- Plage de l’Espiguette, near Montpellier
- Plage del Forat, near Port-Vendres
1. Calanque d’En-Vau beach near Cassis
The Calanque d’En-Vau beach is tucked away between dramatic, towering cliffs. From this stunning pebble beach, you’ll enjoy striking views of turquoise waters framed by rocky walls. It’s a dream location for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts alike.

Calanque d’En-Vau beach
How to get there
There are a few hiking trails to choose from, ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 hours. The beach lies at the end of a narrow 2.5 km valley, about 700 metres deep. As you walk, the valley narrows and eventually feels more like a gorge. You can start the hike from Cassis or from the Col de la Gardiole. The beach is also accessible by boat.
A calanque is a steep, rocky inlet — and the walk is well worth it, as it takes you along coastal paths with panoramic views. It’s a challenging hike due to the steep, rocky terrain, so good footwear is essential.
I recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes, and bringing your swimwear, plenty of water, and perhaps a picnic. Since it’s a pebble beach, water shoes are a good idea.
Tip: The Parc National des Calanques is home to some of the most beautiful beaches along the Mediterranean coast of France. However, during the summer months, access may be restricted due to wildfire risk and to protect the fragile ecosystem. Planning a visit to the calanques? Be sure to check the latest access conditions on the official park website before you go.
Want to explore this beach?
Fancy discovering this beautiful spot while staying at a nearby campsite? Book a pitch at Camping de Ceyreste, located about 25 km away. If you’d rather not share the beach with too many others, it’s best to visit outside the high season and arrive early in the day. Note: there are no facilities on the beach.
2. Plage de la Plonche, Saint-Tropez
Want to explore the charming seaside villages of southern France? Why not stroll the same beaches once frequented by Brigitte Bardot — now popular with international A-listers. These are the classic spots just southwest of St. Tropez.
But you don’t need to be a celebrity to enjoy the quieter side of St. Tropez. A perfect example is the lovely town beach Plage de La Plonche.
This beach became famous as the filming location of Et Dieu… créa la Femme (And God Created Woman) starring Brigitte Bardot. The views here are postcard-worthy: a small bay opens up to refreshing waters, and from the shore you can see across the bay to Sainte-Maxime.

Plage de La Plonche
Under the tower
From the old town, walk under the Tour du Portalet to reach Plage de La Plonche. This beach is ideal for a refreshing morning or evening swim while staying in or near St. Tropez. Afterwards, explore the quaint centre of this former fishing village — with its winding streets, pastel-coloured houses and lively squares. Or simply admire the luxury yachts bobbing in the marina.
3. Plage de la Fosse near the Cap Ferrat peninsula
The Cap Ferrat peninsula, located between Nice and Monaco, is best known for its luxurious villas, stunning natural surroundings and scenic walking trails. On the western coast, you’ll find a peaceful little beach called Plage de la Fosse.
You won’t find any beach clubs or sun loungers here, but you will discover a beautiful pebble beach that’s perfect for laying down your towel and getting stuck into a good book. Enjoy the breathtaking sea view, relax in the shade under the trees, or cool off under the nearby showers.
How to get to Plage de la Fosse
To reach the beach, park your car near the harbour and walk for a few minutes. Do keep in mind that the car park and beach can get busier at weekends.

Walking around the peninsula
You can also set off on lovely walks around the peninsula from the beach. This is a great way to get to know the area and take in more of the beautiful scenery. Route maps are available at the tourist office (5 avenue Denis Séméria – 06230 Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat).

4. Plage de la Mala near Cap d’Ail
Are you an active holidaymaker who loves beautiful beaches too? Then Plage de la Mala is definitely for you. After a 15 to 20-minute walk and around 152 steps down, you’ll reach this secluded spot. The walk itself offers stunning views.
Once at the bottom, you’ll find a beach surrounded by cliffs and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkelling – so don’t forget your snorkel!

Picnicking on the beach
There are two restaurants where you can rent a sunbed and enjoy a meal. Prices are on the higher side, but you’re welcome to bring your own picnic and towels. Fancy a walk? Follow the coastal path by the sea all the way to Monaco.

5. Plage Notre Dame on Île de Porquerolles
Love beaches and boat trips during your seaside holiday in France? Then this is the beach for you. The stunning Plage Notre Dame can be reached by ferry from the port of Hyères.
But once you arrive on the island, it’s not just a hop to the beach. You can walk there from the port of Porquerolles in around an hour, or rent an (electric) bike and get there in 15–20 minutes.

Plage Notre Dame
Picturesque bay
After your walk or bike ride, you’ll arrive at a picturesque bay with stunning views over the turquoise sea. The crystal-clear water is pleasantly warm, and the beach is long and narrow, with plenty of space to lay out your towel and watch the boats drift by.
If you’re truly looking for peace and quiet, we recommend visiting in the low season. Travelling in high season? Take the first ferry of the day and you’ll have the beach almost to yourself until the next one arrives.
Discover the island of Porquerolles
The best way to explore the island is on foot or by (electric) bike. Walk to the lighthouse for a breathtaking panoramic view of the island, the azure sea, the beaches and dramatic cliffs.
Prefer to explore by bike? Ride through the inland areas, past vineyards and groves of olive and fruit trees. The village of Porquerolles is full of traditional Provençal charm and a true paradise for lovers of nature and tranquillity.

6. Plage de la Gaillarde
Plage de la Gaillarde, located around 10 km from Fréjus on the Côte d’Azur, is a lovely spot to soak up the sun and enjoy the sea. Surrounded by rocks and Mediterranean greenery, this inviting beach features soft sand mixed with pebbles and calm, clear waters. The gentle slope into the sea makes it safe for children, and the spot is also popular with snorkellers. It’s perfect for families seeking a peaceful beach day with a touch of atmosphere.

7. Plage de l’Espiguette
Plage de l’Espiguette, about 40 km from Montpellier, is a dream for beach lovers. This vast, untouched sandy beach offers plenty of space to relax and enjoy the sunshine. Surrounded by dunes and unspoilt nature, it feels like a peaceful escape. With its shallow waters, it’s an ideal beach for families with children.

8. Plage del Forat
Our final beach is located near Perpignan. Plage del Forat is a remote and relatively unknown pebble beach tucked away in the bay of Paulilles, in Port‑Vendres (Pyrénées-Orientales). With no official beach facilities, even during peak season it remains wonderfully quiet. The beach features a mix of sand, pebbles and rocks. Don’t forget your water shoes and snorkelling gear – the water here is exceptionally clear! You might even spot a sea urchin, fish or an octopus. You can park at the nearby Paulilles beach, from where it’s about a 10 to 15-minute walk to Plage del Forat.
